How to Hang Pictures Without Nails

Renters lose their security deposits over nail holes. Even homeowners sometimes want to hang artwork without putting holes in new drywall or plaster. Here are the most reliable no-nail methods ranked by weight capacity and surface compatibility.

Command Strips (Up to 16 Pounds)

3M Command Picture Hanging Strips are the gold standard for damage-free hanging. Each set consists of two interlocking adhesive strips: one attaches to the wall, one to the frame. Press together to hang, pull the tab to remove cleanly.

Weight capacity per strip set: small strips hold 4 pounds, medium strips hold 12 pounds, and large strips hold 16 pounds. For heavier frames, use multiple strip sets. The adhesive bonds to painted drywall, wood, tile, glass, and most smooth surfaces. It does not work on textured walls (orange peel, knockdown, or popcorn textures), wallpaper, or bare concrete.

Critical installation tip: press each strip against the surface for 30 seconds with firm pressure. Wait 1 hour before hanging the frame. The adhesive reaches full strength after 24 hours. Most failures are caused by impatient hanging before the adhesive has set.

Adhesive Hooks (Up to 8 Pounds)

For frames with wire or sawtooth hangers on the back, use a Command or Scotch adhesive hook on the wall and hang the frame normally. Hook capacity ranges from 1 to 8 pounds depending on size. The hook protrudes about half an inch from the wall, so use flush-mount picture hooks rather than utility hooks for a cleaner look.

Velcro Strips (Heavy-Duty, Up to 15 Pounds)

Industrial-strength Velcro strips (sold as VELCRO Brand Heavy Duty Tape) provide an alternative to Command strips with the advantage of being repositionable. Attach the hook side to the wall and the loop side to the frame. The frame can be removed and re-hung without replacing the adhesive.

Apply 4-inch strips every 12 inches along the top edge of the frame for frames wider than 18 inches. This distributes weight and prevents the frame from tilting forward off the wall.

Binder Clips and Pushpins (Lightweight Prints and Photos)

For unframed prints, posters, and photographs under 1 pound, clip a small binder clip to the top edge of the print and push a single pushpin through the silver handle loop. The pushpin hole is so small it is invisible after removal and fills in naturally in drywall.

This method creates a clean, gallery-style display where the clip is a deliberate design element. Use matching clips (all black or all silver) for a cohesive look across multiple prints.

Washi tape (decorative paper tape from Japan) adheres to walls without leaving residue when removed. Use short strips of washi tape at each corner of an unframed print. The tape becomes part of the visual presentation, framing the print in a casual, artistic style popular in dorm rooms, studios, and creative spaces.

Washi tape does not hold significant weight and is only suitable for paper prints, photographs, postcards, and lightweight posters. It is not strong enough for framed artwork.

Museum Putty (For Shelved Items)

Museum putty (Quake Hold, Museum Wax, or generic equivalents at about $5 per pack) is a removable adhesive putty originally designed to earthquake-proof museum exhibits. Roll a small ball between your fingers, press it between the wall and the frame corner. It holds items weighing up to 5 pounds on vertical surfaces and removes cleanly from most finishes.

Museum putty also secures items on shelves (vases, figurines, picture frames on mantels) against bumps, pets, and children.

Surface Preparation

Regardless of which method you choose, clean the wall surface with rubbing alcohol before applying any adhesive. Dust, grease, and paint texture reduce bond strength. Let the alcohol evaporate completely (10 seconds) before applying strips or hooks.

Bottom Line

Command strips for framed artwork up to 16 pounds, adhesive hooks for wire-hung frames up to 8 pounds, and pushpins with binder clips for lightweight prints. Clean the wall with rubbing alcohol first, press adhesive firmly for 30 seconds, and wait 1 hour before hanging. These methods leave zero damage when removed properly.
